Corporal Brian Thompson (better known as the Unnamed Mercenary) was one of the four playable characters in the Zombies saga of Call of Duty: Eclipse Warfare, being featured in every map up until his death in Mines of Despair. He is the younger brother of Paul Thompson.

In Call of Duty: Eclipse Warfare II: Opposition Rising, Brian was briefly resurrected in The Final Hour by Colonel Amsel Caligari with the use of the Gauntlet of Ataraxia, being brainwashed into Blackjack, who was ultimately forced to fight his former friends. Following his battle, he was killed once again, this time in an attempt to save him.

History[]

Call of Duty: Eclipse Warfare[]

Brian was a former member of the Coil Arms Division before he defected to the Galactic Council of Alliances. He was the younger brother of Paul Thompson, a Coil Arms Division spy sent to Fort New Trinity to recover intel and schematics on the super serum being developed at the facility for the Eclipse Medical and Health Services' super soldier experiments. After learning he was an expendable asset to the organization and was sentenced to be subjected to various lethal experiments, he fled to his original homeworld of Earth to hide from the organization and faked his death to throw them off his trail.

Unquestionable Ethics[]

In the months following, Brian became a masked mercenary who was hired by the Eclipse Medical and Health Services to help protect Fort New Trinity. However, the facility became overrun by zombies thanks to the after effects of the Hybrillium serum that was injected into "The Hybrid". As the outbreak consumed the facility, he found himself with the accompany of three other survivors; "Athena", Sergeant Alain Bourden and Jack McMack.

While trying to find a way out of the facility, they find a downed spaceship carrying a scientist, who Brian realizes is his own brother Paul. Not wanting to attract any unnecessary attention to the Coil Arms Division on his survival or to his own survivor allies about his history, Brain begrudgingly helped his brother escape the facility, but was rewarded with their own mean of escaping the facility. Before they could escape however, they were forced to combat against The Hybrid and managed to defeat the beast before escaping the site prior to it being neutralized by a nuclear strike.

Celestial Abyss[]

While traveling to an unknown destination, the survivors' spaceship was shot down by the Madrelerorns when their spaceship was passing by Frixion. The ship ultimately crash landed on the planet, where it was revealed to have been carrying toxic waste, which were early versions of the Hybrillium serum. The waste then leaked into the nearby town on the planet, where a Cryptid breeding hatchery was located. The survivors fought their way through the town and ultimately uncovered intel regarding the Coil Arms Division, which Brian was all too familiar with.

Project Omega[]

Sometime after the outbreak on Frixion, the survivors discovered the location of the Coil Arms Division's HQ with the intel they recoverd and soon arrived there, ultimately discovering what has become of the facility and its staff. After searching throughout the facility, they discover the Cricket within the engine room of the station, along with his brother Paul. Paul then revealed he was a spy sent by the Coil Arms Division to steal information on the serum that was being used there, revealing that the Cricket was created out of a improved version of the serum at Fort New Trinity, revealing the beast has increased health, armor, and could tear apart an entire helicopter with no problem before ordering the beast to attack the survivors.

However, the beast refused, instead attacking Paul and brutally mauling him to death before going after the survivors. Unfortunately for the beast, the survivors were able to trick it into destroying the space station's main engine, ultimately electrocuting the beast to death while disabling the power to the station, causing the whole station to begin to spiral out of control. After unlocking the escape pods, the four survivors managed to escape the station as it ultimately became lost in space, seemingly destroying the organization and its work. With the outbreaks seemingly contained, the four survivors parted ways, though "Athena", Alain and Jack traveled to the Human colony of Harmony, where they bonded together.

Dissolution of Harmony[]

Three years following the events of Project Omega, the four survivors were reunited at the city of Praset on Harmony, a human colony planet. There, Brian reveals that he discovered that the Coil Arms Division space station they destroyed was now hurdling towards Harmony and its largest utopia. The four survivors attempted to warn the citizens about the incoming debris, but they all turned a blind eye to the survivors.

Sadly, the city was partially destroyed by the debris of the space station, claiming a few thousand lives while also releasing the contents of the space station around the city, beginning another outbreak. After fighting what seemed like thousands of zombies, the survivors were forced to retreat from the planet as it was nearly destroyed by an onslaught of nuclear missiles, containing the outbreak on Harmony, but leaving the planet heavily damaged and nearly uninhabitable.

Mines of Despair[]

Wanting to learn more about the materials used to create the Hybrillium serum to see if there was a way to reverse its corrupting effects in the event of another outbreak, the survivors traveled to a mining colony on Fidea VI, which was once used by both sides of the Human-Alien Conflict. On the way, Brian reveals who he truly is and reveals his past, revealing that he was in fact a former Coil Arms Division member, who was betrayed by his own allies, even his brother, to which he reveals that he personally knew the scientist that died to the Cricket at the space station, saying that the scientist was actually his older brother.

At the mining colony, they discover that within the "Mines of Despair" was a large deposit of a strange element called "Element X". To ensure that the element never fell into the wrong hands, the survivors planned to destroy the mineshaft. After recovering some explosives and planting it around the mine, the survivors were about to escape when they were confronted by the partially mutated leader of the Coil Arms Division, General Tom McPhillian, who they accidentally summoned to the mine via a blood altar.

After fighting the man, they realized that he was nearly unstoppable due to the immense amount of Element X he absorbed. Knowing what needs to be done, Brian takes out the detonator and detonates the explosives, causing the mine to begin to collapse. As the mine collapsed all around them, Brian ordered the others to flee while they still could while he dealt with McPhillian in order to buy the others some time, much to the other's chargin. As the others were forced to escape, Brian confronts a defeated McPhillian, saying it ends now. As the two fought, the entire mine collapsed on top of them, crushing the two to death while destroying the mine and the Element X samples, critically breaking the Coil Arms Division in the process.

On the surface, the other three lament over Brian's death, remarking he was a good man and overall friend.

Siege of Remnant[]

In the ending cutscene, Colonel Amsel Caligari, McPhillian's second-in-command, managed to get a recovery team to work their way through the destroyed Mines of Despair to recover both Brian and McPhillian's corpses, saying that he has plans with the corpses before laughing maniacally.

Call of Duty: Eclipse Warfare II: Opposition Rising[]

The Recovery Job[]

The corpses of Brian and McPhillian are recovered by several Coil Arms Division members led by Colonel Amsel Caligari from within the collapsed Mines of Despair and brings them to an unknown location, where they are kept on ice for several months.

The Final Hour[]

When Caligari is confronted by the four heroes at the abandoned Coil Arms Division FOB on New Pomerania in the Hoxes System after the heroes exchange the three power cores of the Gauntlet of Ataraxia for the safety of the captured John Barstow, Caligari then unveils the now fully complete weapon, revealing that thanks to their efforts, they were able to restore the life-rejuvenating weapon.

He then proceeds to zap a corpse that was covered by a blanket on a nearby table, saying it was time for a test trial. Suddenly, the now resurrected man arose, revealing to be none other than Brian himself. With the gauntlet, Caligari was able to brainwash Brian into Blackjack and orders him to deal with the heroes. As he arose from the table with glowing light purple eyes and a modified battle axe, he puts on a metal mask with eyeholes and charges the heroes, who try to reason with him, but to no avail, forcing them into battle.

After a long ruthless battle, the heroes are able to subdue Blackjack long enough for their newest ally, Ben Crawford, to use his Psionic Jammer to break the effects of the Gauntlet of Ataraxia on him, freeing him from his brainwashing, but ultimately mortally wounding him since the gauntlet was what resurrected him in the first place. As Brian dies, he tells them that his time has long past, and that they must stop Caligari from using the gauntlet to resurrect McPhillian before dying of his wounds. This time, the heroes were able to bring Brian's corpse with them home, where he was properly laid to rest back home on Earth before continuing their mission in hunting down Caligari.

Call of Duty: Eclipse Warfare III[]

Aftermath[]

Brian is mentioned by the three remaining heroes following the loss of "Athena" after she becomes lost in space in an attempt to defeat Ataraxia. A memorial featuring both his and "Athena"'s sacrifices are seen during the Day of the Departed festival in 2255.
